Welding rods fuse metal pieces together. As a leading welding rod supplier, Texas Iron & Metal carries a variety of grades and sizes for all your welding needs. There are different mechanical properties and operating requirements across welding rod selections. These are the factors to consider when making a purchase:
- Welding current
- Properties of the base metal
- Service conditions and specifications
- Tensile strength
- Environmental job condition
- Welding position
A successful weld depends on how closely you match the composition of the welding rod to the base metal type. More than one type of welding rod can fit your application. There are a few commonly used welding rods, each with different characteristics. 6010 is used for high-power density welds with pipes, water towers, steel storage tanks, or other thick metal applications. These rods require a DC welding machine. 6011 rods can work with both AC or DC welding machines and work well with coated surfaces, heavier metals, or greasy surfaces.
6013 rods leave little splatter and are ideal for a number of applications, such as welding metal sheets. 7018 welding rods are highly versatile and work well with poor or intermediate-quality carbon steel. They work with both AC and DC equipment. A 7024 welding rod has high levels of iron power and a high deposition rate. It’s great for beginners and leaves a smooth finish.
