Games on the Gridiron Made Possible by Steel.

Steel stadiums have long made it possible for football games to be enjoyed by thousands of spectators. As we head into the heart of football season in America, take in these fun facts about some of the world’s most impressive steel stadiums.

Heinz Field

This 12,000-ton steel-reinforced construction packs in nearly 70,000 fans. While other NFL venues hold more people, this stadium features great sightlines: 60 feet from the sideline to the first row and 25 feet in the end zones.

AT&T Stadium

Located in Arlington, Texas, the AT&T Stadium (a.k.a. Cowboys Stadium), opened in 2009. The steel frame construction cost an estimated 1.15 billion dollars, making it the world’s expensive sports venue at that time. The roof is supported by two 91-meter tall arches that span the length of the dome. Plus, the 14,000-ton roof can fully open or close in less than 12 minutes. The 80,000 fans that fit in the stadium make it one of the largest venues in the NFL.

University of Phoenix Stadium

With both a retractable steel roof and field, the University of Phoenix Stadium’s combination of design, engineering and technology makes it one of the most impressive stadiums across the world. While it has 63,400 seats, it can expand to hold 72,000 fans. The natural grass field is wheeled in and out on a “tray” made of 546 steel wheels riding on 13 parallel wheels for a total distance of 741 feet.

Michigan Stadium

An American classic, Michigan Stadium opened in 1927 as one of the first stadiums made of steel and concrete. It’s comprised of 440 tons of steel and 31,000 square feet of wire mesh. Dubbed “The Big House,” it holds 109,901 game-goers and is the largest stadium in the U.S. and second largest in the world.

Going Global.

While they may not be American football stadiums, other steel stadiums around the world deserve mention, including Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa and Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom.
