Ringing in the New Year with Steel

How did you celebrate on New Year's Eve? Did you spend time with family and friends, watch fireworks and help count down the Times Square Ball drop in New York City?

Steel helped several cities ring in the New Year. In fact, some of the most famous, interesting objects dropped on New Year's Eve are made of steel. Check them out below!

Big Acorn, Raleigh, North Carolina
A sculpture honoring Raleigh's title as the 'City of Oaks,' this 1,250-pound steel-and-copper acorn is dropped from a crane every New Year's Eve.

Watermelon Ball, Vincennes, Indiana
Known for its multimillion-dollar melon industry, the oldest city in Indiana drops 12 locally grown watermelons from an 18-foot, 500-pound, foam and steel watermelon.

Steel Ball, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Covered in LED lights, this six-foot, solid steel ball is dropped in Rosa Parks Circle.

Giant Crab, Easton, Maryland
The papier-mache, steel-reinforced crab looks like the area's famed blue crabs.

Steel Ball, Cheyenne, Wyoming
A 75-foot-tall telescopic crane drops a 300-pound steel ball covered with 200 pounds of LED lights.
