Steeling Through the Panama Canal

Steel is playing a large role in the expansion of the Panama Canal. Considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Panama Canal is a 50-mile stretch of artificial, above-sea-level lakes, dams, channels and locks that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The canal drastically reduces the mileage and time required for passenger and commercial ships to travel from Asia to Europe and from the U.S. East Coast to the West Coast. The expansion will add a new set of locks to both the Pacific and Atlantic sides of the canal, each with three new chambers, and will widen and deepen the channels.

Canal Expansion Facts:
•	There are currently 4.5 million cubic yards of concrete used to construct the canal's three sets of locks
•	The canal's locks currently have 80 steel gates that are 65 feet wide, seven feet thick, 47-82 feet tall and weigh 390-730 tons
•	So far, 17,000 tons of sheet piling have been used in the expansion to excavate the Pacific Access Channel and Borinquen Dam — both vital parts of the expansion
•	Transportation of these steel products from the U.S. to the construction site involved 161 rail cars, four ships and 880 trucks

With an expected completion date of 2014, just in time for its 100th anniversary, the expansion will ease traffic jams at the canal's entrances and reduce week-long wait times by doubling the canal's capacity. As a result, more and larger ships will be able to travel faster. For more information on the expansion of the Panama Canal, click here.

Strength of Steel

http://www.history.com/shows/stan-lees-superhumans/bios/super-strength

Dennis Rogers, a native Houstonian, has been featured on The History Channel's Stan Lee's Superhumans. Rogers, only 5'6 inches and a self-confessed 'high school weakling,' is now named the 'Pound-for-Pound Strongest Man in the World' by the Association of Oldetime Barbell and Strongmen and the 'World's Most Performing Strongman' by Oprah Winfrey. His amazing feats include:

•	Bending a steel bar around his neck into a 'U' shape
•	Bending an 8-inch adjustable wrench into the shape of an 'S'
•	Breaking police handcuffs
•	Twisting steel bars and horseshoes
•	Stopping a 100-pound Harley motorcycle (a force of 1,335 pounds) with merely a grip
•	Preventing two U.S. Air Force T-34 aircraft (285 horsepower each) from taking off
•	Driving nails through construction lumber with his fist
