Fighting Fires with Steel

As drought conditions continue in Texas and wildfires have raged across 250 of our state's 254 counties, it is important for business owners and homeowners to know how to protect their property, now and for the future. The right fencing can result in the slowing of a fire's spread until firefighters arrive, minimizing or avoiding damage to yours and your neighbors' property.

Researchers have subjected fences to extreme fire conditions to determine which building materials best defend commercial and residential properties against fires. It's official — steel fences are the best fire barrier and the most effective material at withstanding the intense heat generated by fires. During testing, steel fences were set on fire for 30-minute periods without experiencing a loss of structural integrity. Wood fences, however, quickly burn down, allowing fires to easily spread to your home or business, and act as conduits for spreading fires to or from your neighbors' property.

The style of fencing only matters in preventing the spread of fires when the fence is constructed of wood. Solid panels are most effective wood fences, while those with gaps offer little to no defense against fires. Steel fences appear to be across-the-board effective, although most steel fences are constructed similarly, in panels.

Texas Iron & Metal has all the steel you need to build a protective, fire-resistant fence at your next project. Call 713.672.7595 or visit our yard and warehouse to get started.

The Steel House of Texas

Perched on a cliff overlooking Ransom Canyon, just outside Lubbock, sits one of the most unusual homes in Texas. Architect and sculptor Robert Bruno, the home's owner, constructed the two-story home over a period of 23 years out of 110 tons of welded, rusted steel, with large glass and stained glass windows to optimize light and the expansive views of the Texas sky. It's now one of the most recognizable landmarks in the area, and just goes to show how steel can transform a home into a (fire-resistant) work of art.
