Steel-ing the Spotlight. Texas Iron & Metal customer Bobby Bacon, owner of Tatu Metal Art in Austin, loves to weld and create. The name of his company was inspired by an early piece he sculpted - a metal armadillo. Tatu is Portuguese for armadillo. Besides animals, Bacon also designs abstract concept forms, human and exaggerated human forms, making each piece unique with a hint of humor. About his art, Bacon said, 'I see each piece in my mind as a finished product and the process to build them as an exercise. It is very satisfying to see them come together.' You can find his work displayed in and outside homes in Texas, California, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and Vermont.
Steel and Pipe in the News. Benedict Radcliffe became interested in the Lamborghini at a young age. In 2008, this artist made the Koenig Countach – the metal rod version of the Lamborghini Countach. He used 10mm steel rods to create this full-scale wireframe. About the project, Radcliffe said, 'With the Lamborghini, I made it because I just knew the wireframe technique would suit it and it is the most iconic supercar of all time.' Did you know? In 1885, the 10-story Home Insurance Building was built in Chicago and dubbed the first American skyscraper. At that time, it was the tallest steel structure in the U.S. Only 138 feet tall, this now demolished building pales in comparison to Houston’s own 75-story, 1,049-foot JP Morgan Chase Tower.
