No Steel Left Behind

With the increase in popularity of the green movement came green building. The U.S. Green Building Council developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program. For architects, builders and consumers alike, LEED has come to be a sign of an environmentally friendly building.

LEED measures many phases in the building process and among those is the selection of recycled and recyclable materials and resources. Steel is the most widely recycled material in the U.S. as 88% of all steel products used in construction are recycled into new products. Texas Iron & Metal will even cut your steel to size to reduce onsite waste, another item on the LEED checklist.

Whether you're aspiring to get your LEED certification or just want to do your part in reducing wasted resources, Texas Iron & Metal is the place to call. With our prime and Less Than Prime© (LTP) stock, we make sure no steel is left behind. Our LTP steel is metal with slight flaws that you can purchase for 20-40% off of prime prices.

At Texas Iron & Metal, we'll help you save money while you save the environment. Now that's green. Call us today at 713.672.7595 to find the steel you need for your next project, no matter how large or small.
Steel-ing the Spotlight.

Bobby Bacon, founder and artist of Tatu Metal Art in Austin, and devoted Texas Iron & Metal enthusiast, attended the 2007 Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Bacon's imagination entertained the idea of a whimsical fish that may have lived there eons ago. This idea inspired a new piece of his art, Primordial Fish, which is a 57-foot metal fish that took 400 man hours to create. It took a crane, fork lift and a number of people to move the Primordial Fish.
Steel and Pipe in the News >>

Founded in 1883, Voelkingen Ironworks in the German Saar valley remains the only plant in its original structure from the prime of the iron and steel industry. By 1907, it was operating with seven blast furnaces, all hidden behind scaffolding, pipes and chimneys. The seventh furnace was developed for the production of high quality stainless steels. Voelklingen continues to stand even though it closed in 1986. UNESCO even awarded it the status of a World Cultural Heritage in 1994 and it has been labeled as a historical monument. Did you know?

In 1943, pennies were only made of copper for a short time. Copper was needed to make communications equipment and ammunition during World War II, so the U.S. Mint decided to make pennies with zinc-coated steel. This steel cent, also known as the steelie, is the only regular-issue U.S. coin that a magnet can pick up.
