A Helpful Hurricane 'How To' With hurricane season officially in full swing, many Houston-area homes and businesses face the possibility of flooding, high winds and even tornadoes. While following government evacuations is strongly recommend, building a safe room can also be a viable option to protect yourself and your family. Tornadoes and hurricanes lift debris and can turn seemingly harmless objects into missiles. Cars, loose boards and bricks can all be easily lifted and carried significant distances. For protection against heavy objects, your shelter needs to be solid, which means hollow concrete block simply won't do. Block walls need to be steel reinforced. For example, an 8-inch concrete block structure that has steel bars in the cores at 16 inches on center and has all of the cores filled with a pea gravel mix of concrete is incredibly strong. In addition, you'll want to have a sliding door, as a hinged door can be sucked off its hinges in extreme winds. With solid door tracks and restraining brackets at the bottom corners, you can keep the door from blowing in or out during the storm. It's best to make the door from steel, but you can also use 3/4 inch plywood covered with a minimum of 14 gauge metal sheeting. This can be topped off with a 4-inch-thick concrete roof that is also steel reinforced, and then you have a great place to find shelter from storms right within your home or business.
Weatherproofing your home or business: *Steel roofs can last more than 50 years, while traditional roofs last only 17 years. *Steel doors are fireproof and provide up to 10 times more protection against intruders than wood doors. *Steel-framed homes won't crack, warp, twist, rot, split or settle and are impervious to termites. *The tensile strength of steel is 40,000 pounds of force per square inch -- more than ten times the amount most concretes can handle. For all your steel needs, whether it's structural steel, rebar or pipe, Texas Iron & Metal has everything you need for those projects and much more. Steel and Pipe in the News >> Steve Jobs and his team at Apple recently released the iPhone 4 with a stainless steel band. Apple forged their own alloy to be five times stronger than standard steel. About the band, Jobs said, 'It turns out this is part of some brilliant engineering, which actually uses the stainless steel band as part of the antenna system.' It functions as an antenna for calls as well as accessing the internet. Steel-ing the Spotlight. The Cloister Gallery at the Christ Church Cathedral will be exhibiting the new metal fish art from John Barber. John's sculptures of Gulf coast game fish and tropical reef fish are cut from steel sheet metal. The intricate detail work on each fish is the combination of modern tools, hand tools, chemical patinas and enamel paints. Most of the fish are between 28' and 48' and stand out 3-5' from the wall.

Longtime host of 'The Garden Hotline,' Ralph Snodsmith, recently passed away leaving his fans with more than 35 years of Sunday morning advice. One of his most interesting tips: poke rusty nails in the ground around flowers to enhance color. In fact, a rusting steel-wool pad is useful, too. You crumble it over the soil, and in time, the iron becomes available to the plant making it brilliant and beautiful.
