Steel for the Touchdown!

Are you ready for Super Bowl 2012? So is your team at Texas Iron & Metal! In honor of the big championship game, we're taking a look back at how one of America's favorite games began.

Football dates to the mid-19th century, when it was a disorganized, mob-style game played at colleges and prep schools. Inspired by a combination of rugby and soccer, masses of players rushed an inflatable ball to a goal area — by any means necessary.

In the 1880s, Walter Camp, the Yale football team captain and 'Father of American Football,' made significant rule changes that shaped modern football, including reducing the number of players per team to 11, creating the quarterback position and making touchdowns and field goals worth six and three points each. Games also became much safer after the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) legalized the forward pass — now recognized as the most important rule change in the development of modern football.

The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920, and by the 1930s, football was a national phenomenon with the NFL enjoying rapid growth. In 1968, the championship game with its rival, the smaller American Football League, became known as the Super Bowl. The two leagues merged in 1970 to create one NFL with 26 teams to compete for a Super Bowl win.

And steel has been an important player in the game the whole way. Read below to find out how!

Let's Rodeo!

Saddle up! It's almost time for the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo!

Here are some fun facts about how this popular Houston event — and the largest rodeo in the world — rides on steel:

•	The two massive steel supertrusses that support Reliant Stadium's retractable roof are 84 feet tall, 12 feet wide and weigh 3,750 tons — that's the structural steel equivalent of a 20-story building and the weight of 1,000 cars
•	The Houston METRO Light Rail line, a main source of transportation to the rodeo, contains 7.5 miles of steel rail
•	Steel fencing provides pens for the livestock
•	Thrills offered by the rodeo's carnival rides are supported by steel, including the La Grand Wheel — the largest portable ferris wheel in the Western hemisphere
•	From the famous rotating stage to the sounds of steel guitars, steel makes the rodeo entertainment possible
