Angle Iron is Used in Buildings Worldwide

A team from Yale University led by David Miller, have analyzed usage and demolition data records to find the quantity of iron available for re-cycling.  A major factor in considering large-scale recycling projects for retrieval of Angle Iron, iron and steel framing, and other scrape iron sources, is to conserve energy used in manufacturing. Angle iron consists of steel parts that are formed with an "L-shaped" cross-section. They can be bolted together for reinforced construction.

Building demolitions, infrastructure and car scraping accounts for a large portion of re-cycled metal. The conversion of iron ore into new iron, using a blast furnace, takes up to 75 percent of the energy used for processing iron into steel alloy. There have been significant changes in car manufacturing industries for lighter weight technologies, so the demand for iron and steel has decreased in the U.S.

Developing countries, on the other hand, are increasing their demand for iron, angle iron and steel products needed to develop their new infrastructures.  According to the World Steel Association, the global steel demand will increase by 3.2 percent during 2014. Each year, over 80 million tons of steel are re-cycled. This metal also has a lower energy use and CO2 emissions than lighter weight metals like magnesium and aluminum due to the advanced processes in the steel-making industry. Steel and iron have been a long-term factor in the success in the growth and development of our country. WE now see that the influence and capabilities of the steel industry is moving on to change the face of the entire globe.
